The Glanusk Estate : Homegrown Exhibitors

The Glanusk Estate in Crickhowell, home to Harry and Iona Legge-Bourke, not only has a wide range of events (the Fun Ride, outdoor theatre performances (Mr Stink), family camping, sporting events such as Spartan UK, and the Green Man Festival) but is also the workplace for a number of businesses who I enjoyed meeting and hearing all about as I walked around in brilliant sunshine at the Estate Fayre in April. The very talented Estate Photographer Daniel Moncur-Sime was busy taking photographs and it is my pleasure to share with you such talented people.

Rowan Bespoke - stunning, practical and well made furniture. Rowan's aim is to provide the client with well made furniture which meets their requirements, exceeds their expectations and is made with as little cost to the environment as possible. Construction is carried out using traditional cabinet making techniques such as mortice and tenoned frames on all cabinets and doors, and dovetailing on drawers. Timber is obtained as locally as possible from certified sources. Finishing is all done by hand, with natural oils or the most environmentally friendly paints applied by brush. The furniture is then delivered and if required, fitted.

Sturdy Cycles is run by Tom Sturdy who designs, engineers, manufactures, paints and assembles bespoke bicycles to specification under one roof now in Somerset having being based at Glanusk. Tom uses a combination of steel and carbon fibre composite which allows him to use the advantages of both materials and produce a machine that meets his exacting standards whilst not being prohibitively expensive. Bikes are meant to be ridden after all, a sentiment that Big Welsh shares!

Cadman Furniture are a married team who design and make beautiful contemporary furniture. They believe that beauty and function can form a perfect partnership and there is no reason why one should be sacrificed for the other. As master cabinetmakers, their furniture is of the highest standard, therefore customers can enjoy both quality of craftsmanship and aesthetics. Their folio ranges from simplistic designs through to artistically flamboyant statements and they enjoy the exciting possibilities attainable in making lovingly hand crafted items.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself at The Estate Fayre and am hugely looking forward to the forthcoming events, more details of which can be found on the website.

The Glanusk Estate has recently been awarded an A* in the Health & Safety Audit and for the second year running they are used as a model to take to other Estates, as well as coming joint second in the Royal Forestry Society National Silver Culture Management Awards, with a special mention regarding the broad range of different approaches to forestry management.
